1 Choose fonts that match your brand and message
Fonts are the styles of letters that you use in your typography. They can have different shapes, weights, widths, and decorations. Fonts can also evoke different feelings and associations, such as formal, casual, playful, or elegant. Therefore, you should choose fonts that match your brand identity and the tone of your message. For example, if you are a professional service provider, you might want to use a serif font that suggests reliability and authority. If you are a creative agency, you might want to use a sans serif font that suggests modernity and simplicity.

Make sure to use typography appropriately. A "decorative or display typeface" should be used sparingly. Text content for social media should be brief. If your content is long, could you organize it using a story or reel? You should also utilize the caption for your storytelling. Use your main image and headline to capture your audience and then add your additional information through these tools. Make sure your text is legible and you use hierarchy to organize your message. Finally, check your spelling/grammar before posting.

The best thing to do is to have a brand guide created either by your expects and/or team to utilize for the majority of your posts with a standard set of fonts. Then for things like an event or limited promotion use a complimentary font to give that event its own feel.

2 Use colors that create contrast and harmony
Colors are another important element of typography. They can affect the readability, mood, and impact of your text. You should use colors that create contrast and harmony with your background and other elements in your graphic. Contrast is the difference between light and dark colors that makes your text stand out and easy to read. Harmony is the balance and coordination of colors that makes your graphic pleasing and consistent. You can use color theory and tools to help you choose colors that work well together, such as complementary, analogous, or triadic colors.

If you are questioning if your contrast is high enough, it isn't! Readability is the number one focus of the text post followed by design. I really love having a palette of similar colors with a complimentary color pop.

3 Adjust sizes to create hierarchy and emphasis
Sizes are the relative dimensions of your letters and words in your typography. They can help you create hierarchy and emphasis in your text. Hierarchy is the order of importance and relevance of your text, such as headlines, subheadings, and body text. Emphasis is the stress or attention that you give to certain words or phrases, such as keywords, slogans, or calls to action. You should adjust sizes to make your text clear and compelling. For example, you can use larger sizes for headlines and smaller sizes for body text. You can also use different sizes to highlight words that you want to draw attention to.

If using all one font I like to mix Bold, normal and italic along with sizing to provide emphasis within the image. But also don't go too crazy with it, as too much in one graphic can take away from the meaning.

4 Align your text to create balance and alignment
Alignment is the position and orientation of your text in relation to your graphic and other elements. It can help you create balance and alignment in your typography. Balance is the distribution and proportion of visual weight and interest in your graphic. Alignment is the arrangement and connection of elements along common edges or axes. You should align your text to make your graphic cohesive and organized. For example, you can use center alignment for headlines and left alignment for body text. You can also use grid systems and guides to help you align your text and other elements.

5 Contrast your text to create interest and variety
Contrast is the difference and diversity of elements in your typography. It can help you create interest and variety in your text. You can use contrast to break the monotony and add some spice to your typography. For example, you can use contrast in fonts, colors, sizes, and alignments to create contrast in your text. You can also use contrast in shapes, textures, and images to create contrast with your text. However, you should not use too much contrast, as it can make your graphic confusing and chaotic. You should use contrast sparingly and strategically to enhance your message and style.
Typography is a powerful tool for designing social media graphics that can communicate your brand and message effectively. By following these best practices, you can create typography that is readable, attractive, and expressive. You can also experiment and have fun with typography, as long as you keep your audience and purpose in mind.

Embrace “white space.” Every inch of your social media graphic doesn’t need to have type. Use space to create contrast, harmony, and room for your audience to breathe visually.

Spacing is key! Leave healthy borders and allow the design to breathe on the image. Make sure everything on the page needs to be there.
