1 Choose the right fonts

Fonts have different personalities, moods, and associations that can influence how your message is perceived and understood. Choosing the right fonts for your design can help you create a consistent tone, style, and mood that matches your purpose and audience. For example, if you want to create a professional and formal design, you might use a serif font like Times New Roman or Garamond. If you want to create a playful and casual design, you might use a sans serif font like Arial or Comic Sans. You can also mix and match different fonts to create contrast and hierarchy, but make sure they complement each other and don't clash.

2 Use typography techniques

Typography techniques are ways to manipulate the appearance and arrangement of text to create visual interest and emphasis. For example, you can use size to create hierarchy, focus, and scale; color to create contrast, harmony, and mood; alignment to create balance, alignment, and rhythm; and spacing to create clarity, readability, and breathing space. Additionally, size can be used to create perspective, depth, and movement; color can be used to create associations, emotions, and meanings; alignment can be used to create tension, dynamism, and direction; and spacing can be used to create density, openness, and texture.

Fonts can be discussed for hours on end. Remember that in most commercial art applications that the conveyance of information supersedes the need for a flavorful design. Consider the range in which the observer will be viewing the item in question to best discern what fonts and typesetting is appropriate for the application.

3 Apply layout principles

Layout principles are guidelines to organize the elements of your design in a way that is logical, coherent, and aesthetically pleasing. Proximity, alignment, contrast, and repetition are all common layout principles. Proximity means grouping related elements together and separating unrelated elements apart to create unity, order, and relevance. Alignment means aligning the edges or centers of the elements along a common line or axis to create harmony, consistency, and stability. Contrast creates differences between elements in terms of size, shape, color, texture, or direction to create interest, variety, and focal points. Repetition involves repeating the same or similar elements throughout the design to create coherence, continuity, and recognition. By using these layout principles you can create emphasis, contrast, relationships, movement, direction, flow, hierarchy, meaning, moods and rhythm in your design.

My key recommendation for design layout philosophy is to follow the golden mean ratio in your implementation. There is a reason classical design has stood the test of time. If you can recognize natural geometric relationships, it will go a long ways towards the natural aesthetic response to your design.

4 Experiment with layout techniques

Layout techniques are ways to arrange the elements of your design in a unique and eye-catching manner. A popular technique is using grids, which are frameworks of horizontal and vertical lines that divide your design into columns, rows, and cells. This can be used to create a structured, organized, or modular layout. You can also break the grid for a dynamic or expressive design. Additionally, shapes can define the boundaries, areas, or spaces of your design. Images are also a great technique to convey the message, mood, or theme of your design. You can crop, scale, or filter images for a dramatic, minimal, or stylized layout that will captivate your audience.

The first rule of art is that there are no rules, merely suggestions and guidelines to follow. There are many methodologies for producing a design or artwork depending on the application and desired effect. If you want to truly break barriers and innovate with your design, you must experiment with different methods and techniques not previously used or generally accepted as the normal modus operandi. Sometimes using a certain element in a different or incongruous way than has been previously implemented can lead to a new technique, element, pattern, or layout that catches the eye and piques interest in a new, undiscovered way.

5 Test and refine your design

The final step of creating interest and curiosity in your design using typography and layout is to test and refine your design. Testing involves examining your design for errors, inconsistencies, or improvements, while refining means making adjustments, corrections, or enhancements. To do this, you should proofread your text for spelling, grammar, punctuation, or formatting errors. You can also evaluate your design for alignment, contrast, repetition, or proximity issues. Additionally, reviewing your design for readability, usability, or accessibility issues is important. Finally, collecting feedback from others about your design can help you improve the quality, effectiveness, and appeal of your work.

In the words of the eccentric creator Jaden Smith:“Real Eyes Realize Real Lies”Having another set of keen eyes to look over a project provides a different perspective and context to proof your work. It’s absolutely essential in a quality-control derived professional environment, but can be extremely insightful during the prototype and experimental processes of design.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. Dogmatic design practices can shoehorn us into a particular style or motif, which can be limiting when working across the broad spectrum of design tastes required for commercial/corporate/professional applications. Also do not be overly attached to a particular brand of design or any work in particular. The Tibetan sand mandalas offer a great insight of wisdom into the impermanence of grand design and construction from a fundamental level of the creative arts.
