While we’re expecting some trends to make a comeback in 2024, some can simply stay in the past, and we spoke with a few designers to figure out which ones. Read on for the top home trends designers want to leave in 2023.

    The “-Core” Era

Over the years, there’s been no shortage of “-cores,” but according to Kathy Kuo, founder and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home, it might be time to put the phrase to rest.

"I hope to say goodbye to the trend of adding 'core' to the end of every word and phrase under the sun and calling it a design aesthetic,” Kuo says. “It's not very sustainable and it takes a certain element of individuality out of the interior design process.”

Instead, Kuo sees more lasting trends in the future of home design. For 2024, she predicts that moment-centric trends like Barbiecore and strawberrycore will give way to an ethos rooted in timelessness, quality materials, and artisanal design.

    Curves and Arches

In 2023, curved edges and arches were everywhere in the form of curved sofas, arched bookcases, wavy mirrors, and more. Scott Grooms, design director of Donna Mondi Interior Design (DMID), did actually like this trend, feeling like it brought softness and a touch of playfulness to spaces.

"[Curved furniture] provided a fresh departure from the rigidity of boxy architectural elements," Grooms says.

But, the rise in popularity has caused curved furniture to lose its impact, Instead, Grooms is looking towards out-of-the-box and asymmetrical layouts for furniture and decor in the near future.

“This creates a more dynamic and visually intriguing design and departure from the seemingly mass production of the curve," he says.

Additionally, Los Angeles-based designer Liad Schwartz says architecture is leaning more toward crisp, clean lines in features like doorways and windows.

    Overly Neutral Spaces

Will we say goodbye to all-neutral palettes forever? Not likely, but according to Kuo, the design world is making way for more eclectic color combinations.

Think “nature-centric” colors like sage green, slate blue, and terracotta, along with jewel tones like amethyst garnet, and sapphire.

When it comes to shifting away from neutrals, Schwartz agrees there’s room for more color in our living spaces. “Say goodbye to muted tones and embrace the vibrancy of saturated and bold colors as we dive into 2024,” Schwartz says.

    Zellige Tiles

Once a 2023 tile trend that designers couldn’t get enough of, Zellige tile is a style that Grooms is ready to put to rest.

“Like any trend, overexposure leads to fatigue,” Grooms says. “I think Zellige tiles are quickly losing their luster and quickly becoming ‘so 2023.’”

Instead, Grooms sees natural materials like marble and granite regaining popularity for their timeless appeal and organic variations.

“These materials offer a neutral and natural aesthetic that complements any design style,” Grooms says.

    White and Gray Kitchens

Adding on to leaving behind all-neutral color palettes is the farewell to white and gray kitchens, specifically. According to Schwartz, there’s a shift toward warmer tones and expressive pops of color in kitchens.

“White oak wood and cream colors are stealing the spotlight, providing a cozy and inviting atmosphere,” Schwartz says. “Alternatively, for the bold at heart, incorporating your favorite color into the kitchen is the way to go.”

    Plaster DIYs

In 2023, plaster was simply everywhere, especially among DIYers. DIY projects for wall art, vases, accent decor, and making over furniture circulated the internet as a means to create unique and textured pieces on a budget.

However, according to Schwartz, the all-plaster phase is waning. In favor of excessive plaster furniture and decor DIYs, Schwartz says the key is to strike a balance between texture and practicality, and maybe reserving plaster to the walls in 2024.
