๐ What is a passion fruit?
A Passion Fruit is the name of a tropical round fruit. The fruit is also known as Maracuja in some parts of the world.
The exotic fruit grows in tropical environments on vines.
A thick spongy kind of shell, with a smooth glossy skin on the outside, encloses the fruit pulp on the inside.
The fruit pulp is in a deep orange shade and includes large crunchy seeds.
The seeds are edible and totally worth eating as well as they add texture and they are rather nutritious.
๐ฑ Passion Fruit varieties
You get 2 kinds of Maracuja fruits in this world. The yellow and the purple maracuja.
๐ก Yellow Variety
The yellow variety is larger and the vines grow much thicker than the purple passion fruit.
The fruit flesh of a yellow maracuja is quite tart sour.
Tough, the riper it gets the more sweeter the yellow maracuja becomes.
Yet the yellow variety is preferred in fresh juices and in preserves.
๐ฃ Purple Variety
Purple Passion Fruits are native to South America and are more common on the American continents.
The deep purple fruits are smaller in size and the flesh is much sweeter than the yellow variety.
Purple Maracuja is great enjoyed and eaten fresh.
๐ How does a ripe fruit look like?
You can tell if a passion fruit is ripe by looking at the skin and shell.
A passion fruit is ripe when it gets wrinkles.
You can consume your passion fruits when the skin is smooth or when it's wrinkled.
It should be either yellow (not green) or deep purple (not light purple) in color.
A yellow variety of passion fruit without wrinkles might turn out to be rather sour.
The wrinkles are an indication that the fruit pulp will become sweeter in time.
The fruits are usually picked before they ripen fully in a light purple or green/yellow state.
๐ช How to make the juice?
To get to the passion fruit pulp to prepare a homemade passion fruit juice is easy.
Watch the video to see how it's done easily.
Step 1
Take a passion fruit to hand and place it on a cutting surface.
Cut it into half carefully and open up to reveal the fruit pulp.
Step 2
Spoon out the fruit pulp with seeds and collect the pulp in a bowl.
Step 3
Add the passion fruit pulp with the water and sugar to a blender jar and blend smooth.
Strain the juice so that you don't have large seed pieces in the juice.
It's ok to have a few black seed dots in your juice.
It adds a distinction to the juice.
๐ Where to buy?
Fresh Passion Fruits are common in large grocery supermarkets in cities.
You should be able to come across one of the two varieties at a walmart, target or carrefour.
You might be able to come across passion fruits at an ethnic store, such as a South American, Caribbean, African or Asian store.
The fruits grow in California and Hawaii in the US and the main season is from May to September.
Maracujas are imported to Europe. The name, passion fruit, is unknown there.
Passion fruits can be most commonly bought fresh all year round in places like Australia, South East Asia, India, Columbia, Brasil, other South American countries and the Caribbeans.

Ingredients
- 6 piece Passion Fruits
- 3 cups Water
- 3 Tablespoons Sugar optional, taste test to adjust
- Ice Cubes
US - Metric
Instructions
Keep a bowl ready to collect the fruit pulp and another to collect the shells. Cut the passion fruits into two.
Scoop out the pulp with the seeds with a spoon and collect in the prepared bowl. Discard the shells.
Place the fruit pulp with seeds into a blender jar. *See notes
Add water and sugar.
Blend to a smooth juice.
Take a fine strainer and strain your juice. That way the seed pieces will be collected.
Pour the juice into a glass and serve with ice cooled.
Notes
- You can add sugar, you don't have to. I add some sugar because I used yellow passion fruits and those are sourer (see in post for more info)
- You can strain your pulp or juice from the seeds, you don't have to. The seeds are actually nice crunchy and can add texture. I choose to add the seeds to the blender and to strain them afterward because it's fast and easier to strain them that way. Straining through the thick pulp can be time-consuming and you might end up wasting some pulp.
